APC Wades into Benue Party Crisis
BY OUR CORRESPONDENT
The leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC has taken steps to resolve the squabble over control of party structures in Benue State. The conflict between Governor Samuel Ortom and Senator George Akume, former governor in the state had heightened crisis within the party. Governor Ortom said recently that he had been given a red card and was without a party. Though Adams Oshiomhole , national chairman of the party said there was no truth in the claim that Ortom had been pushed out of the party, the leadership was concerned that the governor could be serious about shopping for another party.
The Deputy National Chairman (North), Sen. Lawal Shu’aibu is reported to have invited the gladiators to a meeting in Abuja to resolve the issue. Ortom has been battling with challenges of bloody attacks by herdsmen, which has resulted in many deaths in the state.
Apart from complaints that his warnings about imminent attacks were ignored by federal authorities and the security , the attempt to curb the attack through a law banning open grazing has been resisted by the herdsmen and Miyetti Allah, the group defending the herdsmen.
There have been concerns that even as Ortom is of the APC the federal government does not appear to sympathize with him on the crisis in the state.
