In Imo, Man, 45, Commits Suicide Over Lockdown

There was confusion, sorrow and tears in a community in Imo State where a man reportedly got fed up with the frustrations engendered by the mandatory lockdown on his state as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and took his own life.
The tragedy at Umudafa, Awo Mbieri in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, on Tuesday, when Osita Ezuruike, 45, committed suicide in his house.

Though the Imo State Police Command was yet to confirm the reason for the tragedy, several sources at the community said the deceased had been complaining bitterly, lately, about his frustrations with life reportedly induced by the lockdown and dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed by the Governor Hope Uzodinma’s administration.

But the Imo State Police Command said the man’s motivation for suicide was still hazy.

However, the Command’s public relations Officer, PRO, Mr. Orlando Ikeokwu, disclosed that Ezuruike’s corpse had been deposited at a morgue, even as investigation had begun in earnest into the tragedy.

Ikeokwu said: “On April 27, acting on a report, operatives of the Divisional Police headquarters in Mbieri moved to Umudafa, Awo Mbieri, Mbaitoli LGA, in a house belonging to one Osita Ezuruike, 45, and met the lifeless body of the said Osita hanging.

“The reason for taking his own life could not be ascertained.

“However, the corpse has been removed to the morgue, while an investigation into the incident has commenced.”
