31 Die in Port Harcourt Church Stampede
Tragedy struck, Saturday, in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, as at least 31 people died during a stampede that broke out during a church charity event as foodstuffs were being distributed to parishioners.
Spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Ms. Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the tragedy, saying it claimed 31 precious lives.
The tragic event, according to local media, was organised by the King’s Assembly Church while distributing foodstuffs and sundry gifts to the poor at a sports field.
Recall that, in recent years, the country has witnessed several stampede tragedies over food distribution, including an aid agency food programme in Borno State where seven women were trampled to death last year.
