Owo Church massacre

Owo Church massacre

The devil attacked the cross on Sunday as dare-devil gunmen invaded a church in Owo, Ondo State, and rained bullets on worshipers killing over 40.

Worshipers at the St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, in Owo town, Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State were reportedly deep in worship as blood-baying terrorists barged into the church and shot randomly at people, leaving many dead, scores critically injured, and the entire community in deep mourning.

A source even said some worshipers were shot, then slaughtered in the mayhem.

Although most reports said 40 people were killed in the attack, a worker at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, where the casualties were taken, told journalists that over 50 people had been brought to the hospital.

“They are still bringing people to the hospital,” he said. “Some have been confirmed dead while some are still breathing. But for now, I can’t specify the number of those dead.”

The tragedy has unsettled both the paramount ruler of Owo Kingdom, behind whose palace is not too far from the tragic church, and the Ondo State Government, with people wondering how such massacre could be perpetrated in the serene town.

A  video that has gone viral on social media even reported innocent children were also killed slaughtered in the attack.

Initial efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, on her mobile phone were not successful as she did not pick up. She also did not reply to a text message sent to her.

However, she later confirmed the tragedy to journalists, saying the command was yet to ascertain the cause and masterminds of the massacre.

“The CP (Commissioner of Police) is on his way to the scene to ascertain the cause of the incident,” reports quoted her as saying. “We have been hearing so many things about it but I will get back to you.”
