Nigeria’s 21st Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Mustafa Adebayo Balogun, popularly known as Tafa Balogun, has died four days to his 75th.
Family sources said the no-nonsense former super cop died of a yet-to-be disclosed ailment at Reddington Hospital in Lagos Island, at about 8.30p.m. on Thursday.
Balogun, one of the most accomplished Inspector-Generals of Police served as Nigeria’s super cop under the Presidency of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
Born on August 8, 1947 at Ila-Orangun in Osun State, Tafa Balogun, began his career as Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Course 3. He worked in various Police commands throughout the federation, gaining promotions as and when due.
Climbing the ladder of success, Tafa Balogun was, at a time, Principal Staff Officer (PSO) to former Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Muhammadu Gambo. He served in Edo State as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Delta State as its pioneer Commissioner of Police, and Commissioner of Police in Rivers and Abia State respectively.
A Fellow of the National War College, Balogun rose to become the Assistant Inspector General of Police, A.I.G, Zone One, Kano, from where he was named the 21st Inspector-General of Police on March 6, 2002 and retired in 2004.
