Colombia has reached the finals of the Under-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup by beating Nigeria on penalties. The development has extended Africa’s wait for a maiden appearance in the final.

Colombian goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo sealed a 6-5 win in the shootout by saving a crucial goal from Comfort Folorunsho in Margao, Goa, after 90 minutes. Nigeria, however, struggled hard until the last minute of the match. Omamuzo Edafe had clinched victory over the USA in the quarter-finals but could not repeat the same in semi-finals.

Another of Edafe’s best performances were witnessed while playing against West Africa.

Now, let us discuss a few glimpses of the U17 FIFA semi-finals. Team South America will face either Spain or Germany.

Nigeria’s Flamingos failed to carve good opportunities throughout the game. Just before the half-hour mark, Colombia scored a point on their name. Mary Espitaleta sprung bright, making a powerful long-range free kick targeting the bar.

Another quick opportunity was chased by Opeyemi Ajakaye, Nigeria, in competition with Colombia. But luck favoured Colombia; right after the 53rd minute, the game was in their control.

Captain Linda Caicedo not just once but twice hit the palms of Faith Omilana. On the other hand, the Nigerian goalkeeper saved the efforts of many players.

Nigeria now plays for third place on Sunday at the sixth U17 Women’s World Cup.
