AFCON 2019: It’s  Eagles versus Bafana Bafana on Wednesday

The Bafana Bafana of South Africa, 1996 champions of the African Cup of Nations shocked host nation Egypt 1-0 at the Cairo International Stadium on Saturday evening, setting up another clash with familiar foes Nigeria, whom they defeated 2-0 in Uyo but had to force to a 1-1 draw in Johannesburg in the qualifying series for this championship.

 A brilliantly taken goal by Thembinkosi Lorch gave the  Bafana Bafana a 1-0 victory over the Pharaohs to set up a mouthwatering clash with Nigeria in the quarter-finals.

PSL player of the year, Thembinkoshi Lorch who was playing in his first match at the 2019 AFCON scored the winning goal for the Bafana in the 85th minute.

The dream of Liverpool’s golden boy, Mohammed Salah, to win the African Cup of Nations got shattered with the Pharaohs’ defeat. The goal came via a counter attack perfectly finished to the chagrin of Egyptian fans.
It was an evening South Africa came in forcefully, not minding that they were playing against the home team.
The Bafana Bafana boys perfectly swallowed Salah as he could not display any of his magical treats that made him the toast of billions of people across the world.

Nigeria and South Africa had met 13 times in international matches with Nigeria winning six times and four draws. South Africa beat Nigeria 2-1 for the first time in an international friendly match in February 2004 Johannesburg. They also beat the Eagles 2-0 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State in June 2017.
