The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Saturday, alerted states along the River Niger and River Benue Basin over an imminent threat of rapid flooding, following the release of water from the Lagdo Dam by authorities in the Republic of Cameroon.
Delivering the alarm at a crowded media briefing in Abuja, NEMA’s Director General, Mr Mustapha Ahmed, warned the concerned states not only to put in place contingency measures to mitigate the impact of the flooding, but immediately begin the evacuation of their citizens in the endangered areas to higher and safer grounds.
Already, the NEMA boss said that states like Adamawa, Taraba and Benue had started feeling the impact of the huge flooding due to the release of water from Lagdo Dam
In addition to advising the states along the River Benue and River Niger Basin to urgently activate their emergency response plans, NEMA also warned that more states in the basin will experience flooding in the days ahead.
