Call it tragedy of a monumental proportion, and you would have hit the nail right on the head.
Or, how do you describe a situation when a young man takes the life of a young lady over a mere phone?
Well, this is part of the riddle that the police in Ondo State will attempt to solve as they have arrested a 21-year-old final year student of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, AAUA, Olubodun Sanni, for allegedly killing another student, one Miss Adekunle Adebisi Ifeoluwa, stealing her iPhone XR in the process.
According to the police, Miss. Adekunle, a 300-level student in the Department of Economics, was found lifeless inside the one-room apartment she rented outside the campus on Friday, on February 2, 2024.
Sanni was alleged to have stabbed his victim to death and stolen her iPhone XR.
Mr. Abayomi Peter Oladipo, the Commissioner of Police, in charge of Ondo State, told journalists while parading some suspects that the police discovered that the deceased’s phone was missing after the murder.
However, the Commissioner said that the police tracked the phone to Sanni, a neighbour to the deceased in the hostel.
“The recovered phone led to further questioning of the suspect who gave details of what happened in his confessional statement,” the Commissioner continued, adding that Sanni would be charged to court at the end of the investigation.
Similarly, CP Abayomi Oladipo also paraded one Umar Ibrahim who reportedly murdered his friend, Mohammadu Adamu.
Umar allegedly committed the offence while they were on their way to Ogali through Kogi State. But the suspect claimed to have acted in self-defence as he noticed that Adamu and one Basiru had planned to kidnap and kill him. The murder, he said, was a pre-emptive strike.
