Dangote Weeps; Immortalises Wigwe; Names Refinery road after him
Africa’s richest man and founder of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, wept and was almost inconsolable on Monday as he paid tribute to the memory of his late friend and Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings,, Dr. Herbert Wigwe.
This happened as professional colleagues of the late banking icon gathered at Eko Hotel in Lagos to celebrate his gargantuan contributions to the banking sector, and the economy at large.
The programme was attended by the movers and shakers of events in business and the banking sector. It was organised to celebrate the professional excellence of the late Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings.
Dangote was moved to tears as he took his turn to pay tribute to Wigwe. In fact, he was so touched by the sad incident that the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Guarantee Trust Bank, Mr. Segun Agbaje, had to return to the stage to support him.
But it was not all tears as Dangote seized the moment to immortalise Herbert Wigwe, his late friend and mentee, by naming the road leading to the Dangote Refinery after him.
“To immortalise my beloved friend, my brother, and my mentee, ” Dangote said, “I have actually decided to name a major refinery and petrochemical road, out of the 120 kilometers, the biggest road will now be named ‘Herbert Wigwe.’”
It would be recalled that Dr. Herbert Wigwe died in a helicopter crash in the United States, with his wife Doreen, son Chizi, and former group chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group, Mr. Abimbola Ogunbanjo.
