As the lockdown imposed on Adamawa State entered its seventh day, Thursday, with government tightening all nooks and crannies to ensure total compliance, a 70-year-old retiree (names withheld ) reportedly slumped and died after trekking in the scorching sun to reach his destination.
According to reports, the incident occurred round 4p.m. on Tuesday at Airport roundabout, popularly known as ‘’Round about Mai Doki’’, and attracted sympathizers who thronged the area to see if the deceased could be saved.
Though the deceased was not a victim of Covid-19, he reportedly suffered that fate because of the likely impact of the lockdown.
An eye witness said that the deceased, whose identification card showed that he was a retired military personnel, was alleged to have trekked to the Bank due to lack of transportation occasioned by the lockdown. But he was on his way back home when he allegedly slumped and his lifeless body found under a tree.
“He just sat under the shade of tree near this Roundabout Mai Doki where he was found dead,” the eye witness who sells fruits around the scene of the incident continued.
‘’We found his retiree’s ID card and about N40,000 cash.’’
A police patrol team evacuated the corpse to the Yola Specialist Hospital mortuary.
Spokesman of the Adamawa State Police Command, DSP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the incident but police is yet to ascertain the cause of the death, adding that the State Commissioner of Police had ordered an investigation into the cause of death. .
“He was a military retiree and hailed from Imburu in Numan local government area and his relatives were contacted,’’ said Nguroje.
