Jubilation as Ekweremadu’s wife released from prison, returns to Abuja
Rapture of joy swept through the Family and homestead of the former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, in Enugu State, on Wednesday as news filtered that his wife, Beatrice Eweremadu, has breathed the sweet air of freedom, having finished serving her jail term in the United Kingdom.
Mrs. Ekweremadu, according to reports, was released from the UK prison on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, and she is now back in the country, specifically, the nation’s capital, Abuja.
The news of her release sparked wild jubilation in the Mpu Community of Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State where a jubilant crowd gathered to praise God for seeing the woman through her prison ordeal, and guaranteeing her safe homecoming.
Beatrice, her husband, and one Obinna Obeta were jailed for plotting to harvest the kidney of a young Nigerian to help former Deputy Senate President’s daughter who was being treated for kidney issues.
Both husband and wife were found guilty of the crime in 2023, and were subsequently jailed.
President of Mpu Town Union Federated, Mr. Benjamin Chijioke, while speaking during the celebrations that heralded Mrs. Ekweremadu’s return, said the community was hugely relieved and happy at her home-coming.
In the spirit of the moment, Chijioke prayed to God to intervene in the case of Ekweremadu, their son, so that he too can return home to continue the great service he was rendering to his people before his conviction.
“Our joy as Mpu people knows no bounds,” Chijioke enthused. “It is a great day for us. Since morning, it has been jubilation and celebration in all the villages.
“People are shedding tears of joy especially those that were depending on the philanthropic disposition of the family to survive. Today is our Orie market day, the whole market was agog with celebration.
“We thank God and also pray that God will intervene so that our illustrious aeon and leader, Distinguished Senator Ike Ekweremadu will join his family soonest. I don’t know what to say again because their absence has brought a huge setback to the community. We missed them a lot but we thank God for everything.”
Equally elated by the development is the councilor representing Mpu Ward, Ogbuka Edwin. While he thanked God for Mrs. Ekweremadu’s safe return, he remarked that the couple’s absence created a huge lacuna in the community’s development.
“Today is like a public holiday in Mpu Community,” Edwin said. “The news was a cheerful one. The absence of Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife created a big gap in the community.
“We are not going to relent in our prayers until our hero and leader joins his family and we are trusting what God can do. It is celebration galore.”
