2 Weeks After, Impeached Mudashiru Obasa Speaks to Supporters, Denies Corruption Allegation
Two weeks after he was impeached as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has punctured his ouster by more than two-thirds of lawmakers.
Commenting for the first time on the saga since he was kicked out as Speaker on January 13, 2025, in what political pundits have described as a coup, Obasa rubbished allegations of corruption levelled against him, declaring that the accusation of financial misappropriations was “impossible.”
The former Speaker spoke to a crowd of supporters at the Speaker’s Lodge, 47, Ikeja GRA, Lagos, where he declared that his colleagues ought to have followed “constitutional procedure” in removing him.
Debunking the allegations of corruption and financial misappropriations brought against him by the lawmakers, Obasa said: “I am not disturbed, I am not afraid,” of the “developments that happened at the Assembly.”
Thirty of the 40-member House of Assembly kicked out Obasa on Monday, January 13, 2025, an action they said was induced by a compelling need to uphold the “sanctity” and “integrity” of the House.
He said the lawmakers owe the people of Lagos State a duty to ensure that the sanctity and the integrity of the House are restored.
Hon. Abiodun Tobun, who represents Epe Constituency 1 in the House, later spoke to journalists, saying that the decision to oust Obasa was unanimous. According to him, the lawmakers owe the people of Lagos State a duty to ensure that the sanctity and the integrity of the House were restored.
“The Constitution makes it clear that the House has the powers to regulate its proceedings,” said Hon. Tobun. “So, the members of the House felt that they’ve had enough of the Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa and today, we have unanimously agreed that Rt Hon Mojisola Meranda Lasbat become the new Speaker of the House.
“So, it was a resolution concurred to by all members of the parliament and so be it. We cannot open our House and allow this parliament to dwindle. We owe our constituents a duty and we owe Lagos State a duty of ensuring that the sanctity of the House and the integrity of this House are restored.”
Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency 1, was Speaker of the Lagos Assembly for 10 years, having been elected by his colleagues in 2015.
His ‘reign’ makes him the longest serving Speaker in the Lagos State House of Assembly. He was promptly replaced with his deputy, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1.
Meranda, the new Speaker, also made history by being the first female and 8th Speaker of the State House of Assembly.
