Clowning Reps! Sani Shehu Knocks Lawmakers for 31 Extra States’ Proposal
…Says: It’s ironic and comical
Civil rights crusader and former Senator representing Kaduna Central in Kaduna State, Senator Shehu Sani, has hammered the House of Representatives for proposing the creation of 31more states in addition to the 36, some of which are struggling to survive.
The House of Representatives Constitution Review Committee, ON Thursday at plenary, proposed the creation of additional 31 states in the country.
Though the proposal is still a long way from the finishing line, but peradventure it sails through, it would bring the number of states in the country to 67.
The proposal was contained in a letter on the floor of the House of Representatives during Thursday’s plenary by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session.
House Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, was absent.
The proposal had hardly landed on the floor of the House when Senator Shehu Sani raced to his X handle, and shredded it, describing the move as cruelly ironic and comical.
Politicians just want to carve out mini colonies for themselves, he submitted, rather than serve the common good. The country could ill-afford more states now, the Senator argued, because most of the existing ones depend on the month federal allocation for survival.
Here are Sani’s words: “While many states are dependent on federal allocation for their survival, the House of Representatives proposal for 31 states is ironic and comical. Politicians just want to carve out mini colonies for themselves.”
The committee, chaired by Kalu, proposed an additional six new states in the North-Central, four in the North-East, five in the North-West, five in the South-South, and seven in the South-West.
The states being considered are: Okun, Okura and Confluence from Kogi; Benue Ala and Apa from Benue; FCT State; Amana from Adamawa; Katagum from Bauchi; Savannah from Borno; Muri from Taraba; New Kaduna and Gujarat from Kaduna State; Tiga and Ari from Kano; Kainji from Kebbi; Etiti and Orashi as the sixth state in the South-East; Adada from Enugu; and Orlu and Aba from current Abia.
Others are Ogoja from Cross River, Warri from Delta, Ori and Obolo from Rivers, Torumbe from Ondo, Ibadan from Oyo, Lagoon from Lagos and Ogun, Ijebu from Ogun, and Oke Ogun/Ijesha from Oyo/Ogun/Osun States.
