Palpable tension enveloped the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday as the House sat in plenary amid heavy security presence.

While security vans and personnel wove a web around the premises of the assembly complex located in the Alausa Area, the Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, presided over plenary despite the invasion of operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, who had earlier sealed the chamber and office of the Speaker.

According to reports, and in what many political watchers described as an aberration, DSS operatives were sighted inside the chamber where they engaged in legislative workers in physical confrontation at the exit door of the chamber.

Amid strong support by the assembly workers, the lawmakers were able to force their way into the chamber at about 12.30p.m. after an initial stand-off with the operatives.

It was not clear on whose orders the operatives acted the way they did.

The invasion by the security personnel was as dramatic as the sudden eruption of crisis at the assembly, on January 13, 2025, during which the then Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, was swept off his exalted seat while on a trip abroad.

He was immediately substituted with his deputy, Hon. Mojisola Meranda. But since then, the assembly has not known peace as each day presents with new political drama.
