AFCON 2019: We’re Going For the Trophy, Says Alex Iwobi

African Cup of Nations 2019 may still be two months away but Arsenal midfield star Alex Iwobi has assured Nigerians that the Super Eagles would not settle for anything except the covetted trophy which Nigerian last won in 2013 in South Africa.

The Eagles star says he wants to match his uncle, Jay-Jay Okocha’s success by winning the Africa Cup of Nations for Nigeria.

Okocha famously won his maiden tournament with Nigeria in 1994, the country securing their second triumph by beating Zambia in the Tunisia final.

“I’ve seen some of his highlights from 1994 and it would be cool to achieve that as well,” he said in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC.

He added: “I’m excited, I have always dreamt of participating and representing my country at the African Cup of Nations, but it won’t be easy for us in Egypt.

“Both dreams are coming true, hopefully I can get to play in Egypt.”

The 22-year-old has won 27 caps, scoring five goals, and admits it’s an honour to represent his country of birth.

“I thought I understand what playing for Nigeria truly means, but the more I play in Nigeria and travel home, the more they [fans] make me believe bigger than I have always dreamt of,” he added.

“The more I see the the passion, the hunger that everyone wants for us to get there and do well. I think when I get there I will understand a bit more than I do now.”
