NUC Scraps Mass Communications in Varsities
…Unbundles it into 7 new degree programmes
Effective from the 2020 admission year, Nigerian universities will neither take new candidates for Mass Communication nor offer it as a course.
This is because the National Universities Commission, NUC, has pronounced the Mass Communication degree dead.
The Commission has unbundled the programme, splitting it into seven different degrees in sync with the realities of the times and to meet current demands.
Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, the Executive Secretary of the commission, made the announcement, Thursday, in Abuja, saying the new arrangement will take off in the 2020 university admission year.
Some of the new degree programmes shooting out of Mass Communication are: Media Studies, Public Relations Studies, Cinematography, to mention a few.
According to Professor Rasheed, “The seven new programmes/departments to be domiciled in a Faculty/ School/College of Communication and Media Studies are: Journalism and Media Studies, Public Relations, Advertising, Broadcasting, Film and Multi-Media Studies, Development Communication Studies, Information and Media Studies.”
