Ogun Boils Over Footballer’s Death During Police Chase As IGP Orders DIG To Take Over

The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, Monday, ordered the Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), DIG Anthony Ogbizi, to, with immediate effect, take over investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of the Deputy Captain of Remo Stars Football Club, Tiamiyu Kazeem.

Mr. Kazeem died on Saturday, February 22, 2020, under some hazy circumstances, in Sagamu, Ogun State, while a police patrol team was trying to arrest him on the suspicion that he was a Yahoo Boy.

While eye witnesses said the footballer was thrown out of a moving vehicle by a police officer, the police in Shagamu said he was hit by a vehicle as he was trying to cross the Shagamu-Benin Expressway during a botched attempt to arrest him.

They said Kazeem, who wore what looked like a military fatigue, got killed while trying to evade arrest by the police.

Shagamu was on the boil on Monday as youths protested the player’s death, insisting that those responsible for his untimely death be made to face the wrath of the law,

At least five people reportedly died during the violent protest and the police struggled very hard to restore order.

The Inspector General of Police waded into the crisis, on Monday, appealing to the angry protesters to stay calm, promising that the culprits would be brought to account.

In a release, the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, said IGP Adamu “ordered the Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), DIG Anthony Ogbizi, to, with immediate effect, take over investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of Late Mr. Tiamiyu Kazeem in Sagamu, Ogun State on 22^nd February, 2020. The IGP gave the order today, 24^th February, 2020 while reviewing daily reports of major crime incidents across the country.”

The IGP, Mba further revealed, commiserated with the “family and friends of the deceased, calls for calm and assures that justice will be done in the matter, reiterating that any person found culpable will be brought to book.”
