Yobe Traders Accuse Ministry Of Not Paying Compensation After Demolition of Shops

Traders at Damaturu Market who had their shops demolished by officials of the Yobe State Government have demanded compensation from the state government after it had promised them eight months after the demolition.

The shops were demolished to build a modern market aimed at improving commercial activities in the state.

According to the traders, the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni said during the commissioning of the new market that he had released all the money meant for compensation but they still wondered why till now they haven’t been paid by the Ministry of Commerce.

They urged the governor to look into the situation as some of them were finding it hard to survive on their own.

“There were 658 shops that were demolished. They paid just 249 shop owners eight months ago but the remaining 409 didn’t receive anything.

“We have been to the Ministry of Commerce several times but it seems that they don’t want to pay us the money,” one of the traders told SaharaReporters.

Alhaji Usman Muazu, Chairman of Harmonized Traders Association in the state, said, “The story is true, some people were not paid.

“The ministry is saying that the files had been submitted to the governor but nothing had been done.”
