Kayode Fayemi, former minister of Mines and Steal development and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC has won the keenly contested governorship election held in Ekiti State on July 14. He won in 11 of the 16 local government areas of the state. He was declared elected by Professor Olayinka Idowu, chief returning officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC at the election. He scored 197,459 votes, defeating his closest rival Kolapo Olusola the outgoing deputy governor and candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP. The latter scored 178,121 votes. Fayemi therefore led with a vote difference of 19,338 votes.
Fayemi was defeated in 2014 by Ayodele Fayose who will now step down as governor having served the constitutional two terms of four years each. When Fayose returned in 2014, he defeated Fayemi by leading in all the 16 local government areas. The Saturday exercise was virtually a contest between Fayemi and Fayose, with Olusola as somewhat of a proxy opponent .
Professor Idowu admitted reports of violence and challenges with the card reader.
