Fuel Subsidy Strike: IGP Warns Miscreants; Beefs Security Nationwide

Reminiscent of the tight security net woven around the nation prior to and during the last general elections, the police high command has warned that it would not allow any security breach as the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, vowed, Tuesday night, to proceed with the strike.

Ahead of the protest, Police Headquarters says the force is beefing up security across the country to forestall the protest from being hijacked by hoodlums and prevent any untoward incident.

Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, a Chief Superintendent of Police, disclosed this in a statement.

In the statement, Adejobi said the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, recognized the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful protests, but appealed to all parties involved to ensure the demonstrations were not hijacked by miscreants.

“In light of this, the IGP orders the Commissioners of Police in charge of various commands, and supervisory Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, to engage in fruitful discussions with the NLC/TUC leadership to foster understanding and reach common grounds on the planned protests,” Adejobi concluded.
