Reprieve came the way of the immediate past governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, granted him administrative bail after cooling his heels for four nights in its custody.
Obiano, whose tenure came to a disgraceful end last Thursday with his wife, Ebelechukwu, locked in a fisticuffs with former Nigerian Ambassador to Spain, Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu, was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, later that night as he attempted to board a flight to Houston, Texas, in the United States.
On Monday, in Abuja, EFCC Chairman, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, told journalists about Obiano’s administrative bail, saying the former governor was cooperating with the commission to perfect the bail conditions.
The EFCC boss also rubbished insinuation in certain quarters that Obiano’s dilemma was politically motivated.
“There is nothing political about the investigation,” Bawa told journalists. “You know what the EFCC stands for. We investigate crimes. We look at people that have committed crimes and we link it up together and then we go to court. That is all we have been doing and that is what we will continue to do.
“We have been accused of media trial. But we will continue to do our investigation professionally.
“He has been granted bail and we are waiting for him to perfect his bail conditions. He has been cooperating with us and everything is going on well.”
