NLC, TUC Give 14-Day Notice of Nationwide Strike, Warns FG

The the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC)  have sent a notice of a 14-day national strike to the Federal Government over failure to implement the 16-point agreement that was reached on October 2, 2023, between them and the FG.

The national leadership of the TUC and NLC expressed sadness that the government appears indifferent to the widespread suffering and adversity in the nation, despite their attempts to maintain industrial peace.

The unions in a statement said: “The October 2nd agreement was focused on addressing the massive suffering and the general harsh socioeconomic consequences of the ill-conceived and ill-executed IMF/World Bank-induced hike in the price of PMS and the devaluation of the naira. These dual policies have had, as we predicted, dire economic consequences for the masses and workers of Nigeria.

“It is regrettable that we are compelled to resort to such measures, but the persistent neglect of the welfare of citizens and Nigerian workers and the massive hardship leave us with no choice.

“Constrained by this development and recognising the urgency of the situation and the imperative of ensuring the protection and defence of the rights and dignity of Nigerian workers and citizens, the NLC and TUC hereby issue a stern ultimatum to the Federal Government to honour their part of the understanding within 14 days from tomorrow, the 9th day of February 2024.”

  • New Naira Notes: Buhari Speaks, Says Give Me 7 Days to End Scarcity Crisis

New Naira Notes: Buhari Speaks, Says Give Me 7 Days to End Scarcity Crisis

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged suffering Nigerians  to give him seven days to resolve the cash crunch crisis in the country.

The President spoke to the Progressive Governors Forum who came to the Presidential Villa to seek solutions to the cash crunch which they said was threatening the good records of the administration in transforming the economy.

Buhari said the currency re-design will give a boost to the economy and provide long-term benefits while expressing doubts about the commitment of banks in particular to the success of the policy. “Some banks are inefficient and only concerned about themselves”, said the president, “even if a year is added, problems associated with selfishness and greed won’t go away.”

He said he had seen television reports about cash shortages and hardship to local businesses and ordinary people and gave assurances that the balance of seven of the 10-day extension will be used to crackdown on whatever stood in the way of successful implementation.

“I will revert to the CBN and the Minting Company. There will be a decision one way or the other in the remaining seven days of the 10-day extension,” the president assured.

The governors told the president that, while they agreed that his decision on the renewal of currency was good and they are fully in support, its execution had been botched and their constituents were becoming increasingly upset.

They told the president that, as leaders of the government and party in their different states, they were becoming anxious about a slump in the economy and the series of elections that are coming. They requested the president to use his powers to direct the concurrent flourish of the new and old notes till the end of the year.

According Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President Media and Publicity, the president said when he considered giving the approval to the policy, he demanded an undertaking from the CBN that no new notes will be printed in a foreign country and they in turn gave him assurances that there was enough capacity, manpower and equipment to print the currency for local needs. He said he needed to go back to find out what was actually happening.

President Buhari told the governors that, being closer to the people, he had heard their cries and will act in a way that there will be a solution.

  • Workers Demand Adeyemi University Take-Off, Give Buhari One Month to Appoint Vice-Chancellor

Workers Demand Adeyemi University Take-Off, Give Buhari One Month to Appoint Vice-Chancellor

Workers’ unions have demanded immediate takeoff and implementation of the Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo (Establishment) Act.

The institution was upgraded to university status in January 2022.

The unions in a joint statement said they were apprehensive that six months after the upgrade, the Nigerian government had not appointed a Vice-Chancellor to oversee the new status.

They called on President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint a Vice-Chancellor for the college turned university.

The workers noted that the institution should be treated and accorded the status it deserves.

The statement read: “The joint Congress of the Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education, Nigeria (SSUCOEN), National Association of Colleges of Education Academic Technologists of Nigeria (NACEATON) and The Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Associated Institutions (NASU) held on Tuesday, 28th June 2022 at the Olusegun Obasanjo Auditorium.

“The Congress was a unique one with the presence of Congressmen and women of the three (3) Unions. The joint staff Unions after their deliberations moved to the gate of the Institution and held a peaceful protest.

“The Chairmen of the three (3) Unions addressed the Joint Congress and the issue of the slow implementation/take-off of Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo (AFUED) was discussed.

“The joint Congress also considered the several issues surrounding the assented Official Gazette of the Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo (AFUED) and the underpinning situation frustrating the takeoff of the University.

“Observations, i. The Act that established AFUED was passed by the Senate on 13th October, 2021, passed by the House of Representatives on 23rd July, 2020, signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly on 25th November, 2021 and signed into Law by President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR on 23rd December, 2021. By implication, ACE, Ondo no longer exist and Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo ought to have taken effect from Thursday 23rd December, 2021.

“ii. The Federal Republic of Nigeria Official Gazette, No. 4, Vol. 19, Lagos – 7th January, 2022 recognized Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo (Establishment) Act, 2021{pages A29-69}. By this Act, the law establishing Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo had been repealed.

“iii. In spite of {ii} above, the expected and eagerly anticipated take-off of AFUED did not happen. Six (6) months into the new status, neither the Governing Council of ACE, Ondo nor the Management has explained to the College community what is delaying the implementation.

    1. To the dismay of the Unions, the Governing Council approved the reappointment of the College Provost and Registrar which is at variance with new University status. The Unions are of the strong opinion that the Council should have carried along the College community in arriving at this critical decision.

“v. Second schedule, sections 24 (8) and 27 (5) under Transfer of Functions, item 2: states “the person who are members of the Provisional Council are deemed to constitute until the date when the Council as set up under the Third Schedule to this Act shall have been duly constituted” (A56). Therefore, the Official Gazette empowers the Governing Council to still continue in office as the Council of the University but not as Council of College of Education.

“The Joint Congress after much deliberations and a peaceful protest therefore recommends as follows: The immediate takeoff of the University as assented into Law by President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR with effect from Thursday 23rd December, 2021.

“The immediate reversal of the reappointment of the Provost and the College Registrar for a second term.

“The Official Gazette should be fully implemented with immediate effect.

“The immediate appointment of a Vice Chancellor for the University.

“One (1) month notice is hereby given to the Federal Government to effect the implementation of the recommendations of the Joint Congress of the three (3) Unions.”

SaharaReporters learnt that the workers earlier staged a protest, blocking the Ore-Ondo highway.

  • Governors Give FG Conditions Before Judicial, Legislature Autonomy in States

Governors Give FG Conditions Before Judicial, Legislature Autonomy in States

Nigerian state governors have demanded for conditions from the Federal Government for them to grant autonomy to the Legislature and the Judiciary.

They two conditions, according to them will smoothen the implementation of the decisions. These are: Immediate termination of the ongoing strike by judicial workers and the disbandment of the Presidential Implementation Committee on the Autonomy of State Legislature and Judiciary.

The governors said ending the strike would enable states to fine tune the legal framework to back the decisions.

They accused the Autonomy Committee of “acting as a permanent committee basically misguiding and overheating the relationship between State Governments and the other arms of government”.

These positions were taken at yesterday’s meeting of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), presided over by its Chairman and Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi.

Other decisions taken at the meeting include the need to achieve debt limit and sustainability as well as support for the full deregulation of the downstream oil sector/withdrawal of subsidy.

The ‘Asaba Declaration’ issued after the Southern governors meeting was not discussed at the parley “because it was not on the agenda,” it was learnt last night.

The Asaba summit endorsed restructuring, national dialogue, total ban on open grazing and review of revenue allocation.

A governor said: “Most of the demands in the so-called Asaba Declaration had been endorsed by the NGF since March. There was no need to revisit them.”
