Detained Publisher, Jones Abiri, released on bail

Jones Abiri, publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Weekly Source newspaper, who was detained on May 22, 2019, after his arraignment at a Federal High Court in Abuja, has regained his freedom.

Abiri breathed the air of freedom, Friday evening, when he was released by the department of State Services, DSS, having met his bail conditions.

He is currently being tried for alleged link to armed militancy in the Niger Delta.

Abiri’s travail started in 2016 when he arrested and released two years after intense campaign by activists and the media.

He was granted bail in June, but had been unable to meet the bail conditions till October 21, when the court varied the conditions.

His initial bail conditions had included a bond of N100 million as well as a surety in like sum within Abuja.

An online newspaper, PREMIUM TIMES, quoted Abiri’s lawyer, Mr. Samuel Ogala, as saying that the publisher had been released on bail after his surety, Mr. Godknows Igali, Friday, provided documents necessary for Abiri’s bail.

It was also revealed by the newspaper that Abiri’s lawyer disclosed that his client had informed the court that he was unable to produce a surety in Abuja as directed by the court.
