Tragedy! ‘Revolutionary Singer,’ Sound Sultan Succumbs to Cancer

Popular Nigerian songwriter, singer actor, and movie producer, Olanrewaju Fasasi, fondly called Sound Sultan lost his battle with cancer, and succumbed to the cold hands of death on Sunday morning, his family confirms.

In a statement released by the family and signed by his sibling Kayode Fasasi, the lively 44-year-old singer died after a fighting against a rare form of cancer, Angioimmunoblastic T-Cell Lymphoma.

The music maestro is survived by his wife and three children.

Sound Sultan’s voice first swept across the airwaves in the early 2000s with his hit single ‘Jagbajantis’, a song that describes the political and economic situation of the country at the time. His song received nationwide airplays and he was one of the most vibrant singers at the time.

His hit single saw him signed up by the biggest record label in Nigeria at the time, Kennis Music. He released four of his seven albums with the record label.

Statement by Fasasi’s Family

Fasasi also dived into acting, playing roles in the acclaimed  comedy, ‘Head Gone’ in 2014. The comedy movie had a rerun in 2018. He also produced the stage musical ‘Jungle Story’.

His death comes as a rude shock to many as social media has been set ablaze with condolences messages from celebrities and fans alike.
