Omoyele Sowore, convener of #RevolutionNow, has said that when he was imprisoned by the Nigerian government five years ago, he never thought he would see his family again.
Sowore arrived in the United States of America on Saturday after five years to reunite with his family.
This comes after a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the release of his passport following the decision of the Nigerian government to withdraw its treasonable felony case against the student union leader, four years after it was seized and he was barred from leaving Nigeria.
The human rights activist and two-time presidential candidate was warmly welcomed by friends and family in the US on Saturday.
Sowore, who departed the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos late Friday night on a United Airlines flight to DC Washington Dulles International Airport, was accompanied by his supporters to the airport.
Speaking about his prison experience to CBS News, Sowore said, “I can’t even describe it because I never thought I would make it back here.”
The human rights activist added that his biggest offence “is establishing a media company that exposes corruption because corruption is Nigeria’s biggest problem.”
He added he desired to return to Nigeria anytime soon to continue his struggle.
He said: “Well, my wife can burn the passport but she can’t burn the will to make Nigeria become a democratic, successful and prosperous society.
“I will go back to Nigeria. There is no going back on making Nigeria a better country.”
