Rescue Efforts Ongoing as 3-Storey Building Collapses in Lagos

First responders and emergency management authorities are working their fingers to the bone, searching for survivors at a building site in the Yaba area of Lagos, where a three-storey building collapsed Saturday.

The collapse of the building located at Akanbi Crescent, Yaba, came  months after a 21-storey super structure went down at Gerald Road, in the Ikoyi area of the mega city, last year, claiming 45 lives, including the developer, Femi Odubona.

According to reports, a section of the building, which is still under construction, gave way suddenly on Saturday and nobody has been able to place a finger on the cause of the incident nor the casualties.

However, the tragedy didn’t come as a surprise to many residents of the area as a part of the building was reported to have collapsed last year. And despite the earlier mishap, said a resident, the owners still went ahead with the construction.

Relevant agencies of government that ought to have waded into the matter to avert tragedy were said to have looked the other way.

Speaking on the incident, the Director-General of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyitolu, said his organisation was working frantically to search for, and rescue people who may be trapped in the rubble.
