Sharia Court Sentences Musician To Death For Blasphemy

A Sharia Court sitting in Kano, on Monday, sentenced a musician to death for expressions considered blasphemous of the Holy Prophet Mohammed.

The court ruled that it found Yahaya Aminu Sharif, 22, guilty of blasphemy and should die by hanging.

Sharif was said to have made the derogatory expressions in one of his songs which he reportedly circulated on WhatsApp sometime in March, this year.

Consequently, angry demonstrators burnt down his family house.

Reports quoted Alhaji Baba-Jibo Ibrahim, spokesperson of the Kano State Ministry of Justice, as having confirmed that Sharif had legal representation during the trial that lasted four months.

The trial was reportedly held behind closed doors for security reasons.

Sharif is the second person to be sentenced to death for blasphemy since several states in the north adopted the Sharia Law in the early 2000s.

However, there were strong indications, Monday night, that the condemned musician will appeal the judgment.
