Sanwo-Olu Shuts Down Markets For 7 days

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has given the order for the closure of all markets with the exception of those selling essential commodities such as medical equipment, water, foodstuff, with effect from Thursday.

The Governor said this in a live press briefing on Tuesday. Sanwo-Olu believes this would help the Lagos State government further contain the spread of this deadly virus.

Earlier today, there were 29 confirmed cases in Lagos State, of the 42 cases reported in Nigeria, making it the state with the highest number of coronavirus positive patients.

He said, “It is not a total lockdown, we still want people on essential services to go about their normal activities.

According to the Governor, the closure is to last for 7 days, starting from Thursday 26th, 2020.

“All open markets and stores except for sellers of food and medicines, medical equipment and other essential life-saving products are directed to close from Thursday 26th, 2020 for the next 7 days.”

“We are trying to de-centralise markets in Lagos. This is why we want to use some of our closed schools as markets, so people can buy food and medicine without going a long distance.

“It is only when you are alive that you can talk about economics and finance.”
