IBB sings a new song

...Hails June 12 as Democracy Day

BY BEN MEMULETIWON

It is a paradox of a chilling extreme. In an ironic twist, Former military president, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, who annulled the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s political history, is singing a new song.

General Babangida showered encomiums on President Muhammadu Buhari over the Federal Government’s eventual recognition of June 12 as watershed in the chequered history of Nigeria.

President Buhari had declared, on Wednesday, that henceforth June 12 would be Nigeria’s Democracy Day instead of May 29.

In his response to the landmark decision, General Babangida wrote in his tweeter handle: “June 12 should indeed be our Democracy Day because it is very symbolic to our history; that was when we had the freest and fairest election and I am really happy the election was conducted by me.”

Though IBB was mute on the posthumous award of GCFR given to the winner of that historic vote, Bashorun MKO Abiola, and the GCON given to the late legal luminary and human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, the tone of the tweet however mirrors the inner mind of a troubled man who suddenly found relief..
