NASS Shutdown: Heads to Roll-Presidency
There were strong indications, Tuesday, that heads may roll at the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force over Tuesday’s shutdown of the National Assembly, NASS.
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, said the blockade of the National Assembly by operatives of the Department of State Services(DSS) was unauthorized, and described it as a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law, and all accepted norms of law and order.
A statement issued by Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity in the Office of the Acting President, said that the action of the DSS was not authorised by the presidency.
Akande disclosed, in the statement, that the Acting President was miffed by the unlawful act, which was he said was done without the knowledge of the Presidency, and therefore, condemnable and completely unacceptable.
“By this statement, Professor Osinbajo is consequently assuring Nigerians that all persons within the law enforcement apparatus who participated in this travesty will be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action,” the statement said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that Professor Osinbajo had earlier Tuesday sacked Lawal Daura, the Director-General of the secret service and asked him to handover to the most senior person in the organisation.
Daura was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari on July 2, 2015, following the dismissal of his predecessor Ita Ekpeyong.
He once worked in the service and retired. He was born August 5, 1953, in Daura Katsina state.
