The Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Peter Obi, in the 2019 general election has asserted that the involvement of the military in the Governorship and House of Assembly election worsened the situation in Rivers State.
Obi made the remark on Tuesday in his review of the Governorship and House of Assembly election held on March 9, 2019.
His statement was issued by his media office.
“The needless involvement of the military has aggravated the situation in Rivers State,” he said.
He said the activities of the military showed undue interest in Rivers which he described as a strong PDP state.
The former Anambra State governor said a situation where a collation centre was moved to a military location and international observers were denied access was a breach of democratic norms.
According to him, it “is clearly unacceptable.”
He said it was unfortunate that Rivers State Governor, Neysom Wike, was subjected to harassment.
He therefore called on all within and outside the country to condemn the situation in the state.
“Any reasonable person should know that Governor Wike is the last person to be harassed knowing what he has put in just in four years in the delivery of democracy dividends to the people of Rivers State,” he said.
Obi said it was obvious that the six states where elections were declared inconclusive were those where the PDP was already winning.
APC, he said, had become “so shameless in its desperation as it has become brazen in perpetuating its rigging agenda.”
