Buhari fires NHIS boss, Prof. Usman Yusuf; appoints new CEO

…Approves second term for DG, NCDC, Prof. Chikwe Ihekweazu

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the termination of the Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, Prof. Usman Yusuf, and appointed a new one in his stead.

The new NHIS boss is Prof. Mohammed Nasir Sambo.

The change was announced via a press release by Mrs. Boade Akinola, director in charge of media and public relations in the Federal Ministry of Health, the supervising ministry.

Akinola explained that the termination of Yusuf, who has been on administrative leave for some time now, was sequel to the recommendations of the report of an Independent Fact Finding Panel into the management crisis at NHIS.

The release also said the President has also approved the dissolution of the Governing Board of NHIS and directed the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, to exercise full powers of the council pending the constitution of a new board.

Akinola also announced that President Buhari has also approved the appointment of Dr. Chikwe Andreas Ihekweazu for a second term as Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC.

The tenure elongation, according to the release, conforms to the provisions of section 11(1)(3) of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control(Establishment) Act, 2018.
