Two police officers were feared killed and seven locals reportedly kidnapped, Monday, when some yet-to-be identified gunmen opened fire on a police convoy and some commuter-vehicles along the Gyella Road, in Mubi South Local Government of Area of Adamawa state, north east Nigeria.

Local vigilante sources told The Crest that the attack occurred between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. as the police officers were returning from Mubi Police Headquarters after handing over suspects.

“Some locals had earlier alerted the Mubi police detachment in Mubi South about some suspicious persons who came to tthe own making large purchases of food items,” a local vigilante chief in the area told The Crest on Tuesday on phone.

“The police swiftly swung into action, apprehended the suspects, and took them to the Mubi Police Area Command Headquarters in Mubi North.

“However, while they were returning to their duty post along Gyella road, they were ambushed by some unknown gunmen who killed the police driver and one other officer.

“The gunmen also ambushed other commuter vehicles and kidnapped six other travellers,” the  local vigilante chief further disclosed.

It would be recalled that only last week, a police DPO, Ahidjo Muhammed, and a businessman, Muhammadu Mbilla, both from Mubi, were kidnapped by some suspected gunmen .

When contacted, spokesman of the State Police Command, Suleiman Nguroje, said, “I am not aware of the incident but I will confirm and get across to you.”

Like other neighbouring states, Adamawa had, in recent times, been plagued by kidnappings and violent abductions, forcing residents to sleep with one eye open.
