COVID-19: Enugu Orders Shutdown Of Markets, Closes Land borders

In the wake of the rapidly spreading coronavirus, the Enugu State Government isn’t leaving any stone unturned. It has ordered the closure of all land borders and inter-state transportation in the state indefinitely. This will take effect from 6 pm on Tuesday, March 31, 2020.

This announcement was made in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya.

The only exception to the inter-state travelling is medical emergency services.

The statement also addressed other directives which include “those dealing on food items, water, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and other basic items of daily domestic need who must comply with the standard hygiene protocol as stipulated by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), including frequent handwashing with soap, use of sanitizer and social distancing.”

According to the Secretary, “all Local Government Chairmen are hereby directed to ensure strict compliance with the closure of the markets within their respective local government councils, without prejudice to the exceptions above”.

The government also called for calm and understanding from the residents saying, “at this difficult time as no sacrifice is too much to save the lives of our people”

To ensure that these directives were followed to the letter, the state government directed all security agencies and the State Medical Response Team to be at alert and be ready to enforce the directives aforementioned.
