COVID-19: Buhari Orders Payment of Lecturers’ Withheld Salaries

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the payment of the February and March salaries of lecturers in federal universities, who had not registered in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.

A statement by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, on Tuesday, said “the payment was immediate and without condition”.

The salaries had been withheld by the FG following the refusal of the lectures to enroll in the IPPIS.

In the statement made available to newsmen by the Minister’s media aide, Emmanuel Nzomiwu, he further stated that the President also directed the Minister of Finance, Budget and Planning, and the Accountant General of the Federation to effect the payment urgently by all means to cushion the effects of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown period on lecturers and members of their family”.

Ngige disclosed that all the Vice-Chancellors have been asked to revalidate the Bank Verification Numbers of the affected lecturers and forward same to the Accountant General of the Federation for the payments.
