The Jigawa State Government, Thursday, confirmed that 92 citizens died in Hadejia within one week.
Dr. Abdulwahab Muhammad, chairman of the investigating committee set up by Governor Mohammed Badaru Abubakar to investigate the mysterious deaths, revealed this to journalists in Dutse, the capital, after a fact-finding survey.
He said his team discovered that between April 28 and May 5, 2020 (one week), 44 deaths were recorded in one of the two general hospitals in the town while a community survey revealed 46 more deaths.
And since one of the best ways to verify the deaths was to visit where the bodies were buried, Dr. Muhammad said his team, with the help of the traditional council and some undertakers, visited two cemeteries where they counted 92 fresh graves.
He said 70 percent of the dead had preconditions like diabetes, hypertension, liver disorder and dementia, among others, all suggesting that they were 60 years old and above.
And of the 92, only one had symptoms of COVID-19. This, he said, cancelled the suggestion that the deaths might be COVID-19 related.
