NCDC Reacts To British COVID-19 ‘Life Saving Drug’ Dexamethasone

...Says no drug is approved for treatment yet in Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has reacted to the British Government recent announcement of Dexamethasone,as a drug that helps COVID-19 patients recover quickly.

According to the British Government, the drug has reduced death risks for patients who were placed on ventilators by one-third.

The NCDC in a tweet reacted to the announcement, saying the drug will not be used to treat patients in Nigeria, till it has gotten approval from the World Health Organisation, WHO.

The Centre added the Nigerian government has not approved any treatment for COVID-19 in the country yet.

It said, “The NCDC is aware of recent outcomes from a UK-Government funded clinical trial for COVID-19.

“The results support the use of Dexamethsaone as a possible treatment to reduce the risk of death among COVID-19 patients, who require oxygen or mechanical ventilation.

“Please note that the Government of Nigeria has not validated or approved any treatment for COVID-19.

“In addition, the use of Dexamethasone for COVID-19 treatment has not been validated by @WHO.”
