The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, Monday, announced that it would allow properly accredited television houses to broadcast judgements in the petitions filed against the election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, now slated for Wednesday, September 6, 2023.
Disclosing this via a press release in Abuja on Monday, the Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal, Mr. Umar Bangari, said that the decision to allow interested television stations to broadcast the judgments live was to enable the general public to follow the proceedings in order to promote transparency and openness in the process.
Judgments have been fixed for several petitions, including those involving the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last election, Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as well as that of the Allied Peoples Movement, challenging the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and others.
Bangari further revealed that access to the court premises will be limited to accredited individuals, including journalists, counsels and political party representatives. Members of the public interested in following the proceedings are advised to watch them on television.
“In a bid to promote transparency and openness, these judgments will be televised live by interested Television Stations for the public to follow,” Bangari said in the release.
“The court of appeal wishes to inform the general public that judgment in the following petitions before the Presidential Election Petition Court will be delivered on Wednesday 6. September, 2023:
- CAREPC/03/2023 between Mr. Peter Gregory Obi & Anor VS. Independent National Electoral Commission & 3 Ors.
- CA/PEPC/04/2023 between Allied Peoples Movement VS. Independent National Electoral Commission & 4 Ors.
- CA/PEPC/05/2023 between Abubakar Atiku & Anor VS. Independent National Electoral Commission & 2 Ors.
“Access to the Court premises will be strictly on accreditation.
“Only accredited individuals, including counsel and representatives of political parties, will be granted access into the Courtroom.
“Interested members of the public are advised to watch proceedings from their television sets.”
