Before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reacted sharply to rumour bordering on the integrity of his Chief of Staff, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, declaring that he had “absolute confidence in the former Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Tinubu’s declaration came on the heels of a viral report that suggested that the Chief of Staff was facing perhaps the toughest integrity crisis of his life sequel to allegations in some quarters that he had been “trading off appointments in the government of President Tinubu to the highest bidder.”
According to the report, there was alleged spiraling anger among core Tinubu loyalists who were allegedly agitating for Gbajabiamila’s ouster of from the Presidential Villa for allegedly influencing appointments for lucre which they insisted had resulted in some embarrassing situations for the President.
The viral report particularly cited the recent appointment of 10 Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs, of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, referring to sources who reportedly claimed that the name of Ekiti REC was substituted with the name of a former commissioner in the defunct Kayode Fayemi administration.
The reported further claimed: “Another source noted that President’s Private Principal Secretary Akeem Okunola, was already doing some of his (Gbajabiamila’s) work…the President was already putting up a team that will help the CoS.”
But on Monday, President Tinubu rubbished all the allegations against Gbajabiamila, affirming that: “I have absolute confidence in my Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
“So, all campaign of calumny, the buck stops here! If I make mistakes, I’ll own up to them.
“Like everyone in the country, I make mistakes. And when I make mistakes, I iron them out and correct them. Perfection is of God Almighty.”
