Senator John Azuta-Mbata elected President-General, Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide

Senator John Azuta-Mbata was, Friday, January 10, 2025, elected as the 13th President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, an influential Igbo socio-cultural organisation.

Azuta-Mbata and 15 others were elected into the new Executive Committee of the pan-Igbo socio-cultural organization, in an election held in Enugu on Friday using voice voting.

Azuta-Mbata, the first Ikwerre native to serve as Rivers East Senator under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, succeeds Nze Fidelis Ozichukwu Chukwu who spent 27 days to serve out the slot of Imo State following the deaths of Prof. George Obiozor and Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu respectively.

After Iwuanyanwu, the position had been zoned to Rivers State in South-south Nigeria thus making Azu-Mbata’s election a significant milestone in the history of Ohaneze Ndigbo.
