Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF, and Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Saturday, described the killing of Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, second daughter of Afenifere leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, as a personal tragedy.
Fayemi, who also disclosed that the deceased visited him in Ado-Ekiti a day before she was shot, noted that the avoidable tragedy was a wake-up call for South West Governors to rise up and rescue their people from the spiralling insecurity in the region.
The governor made the remarks after paying a condolence visit to Chief Fasoranti at his country home on Saturday.
“This is a tragedy of immense proportion,” Fayemi told journalists. “And we all owe a duty to tackle this problem headlong.
“I knew Mrs. Olakunrin very well. As a matter of fact, she was with me day before yesterday. She came to see me day before yesterday before heading to Lagos. So, it’s a personal loss. It’s a tragic situation for us and we just have to do something to rescue our people.”
Oyo State Governor, Mr. Seyi Makinde, aligned with Fayemi’s position, restating the commitment of South West governors to snatch the region from the icy clutches of criminals.
He made the declaration while condoling with the grieving elder statesman.
“All the governors of the South West held a security summit two weeks back,” Makinde recalled. “And we are not frivolous about it. We take it (insecurity in the region) seriously. With what has happened, we just have to double up our efforts.”
Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, former Governor of Ondo State, who also visited Pa Fasoranti, said: “Incidents like this will task the very fabric of our nation. Will require very, very profound political will. Will require the deployment of all the technical and human capacity. We must leverage on technology. We must definitely get to the root of all these things.”
