Thousands of President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the United States Congress, Capitol, Wednesday, and forced the confirmation of Biden’s victory to a halt.
The throng overwhelmed the Capitol Police, broke through police cordon, and laid siege to the national asset in a manner that stunned the world.
They forced their way into the highly secured Capitol breaking windows. A protester sat on the Senate Leader’s seat, while others roamed the chamber.
“This is a coup,” a shocked observer said.
It is like civil war,” another said.
Donald Trump was silent for most of the time the mob unleashed terror on the Capitol forcing the emergency evacuation of his own Vice President, Mike Pence, and congressional leaders.
At some point, the siege spiraled so dangerously and law enforcement so overwhelmed that lawmakers were asked to retreat to their offices and possibly hide underneath their tables and chairs in case of a showdown between the protesters and law enforcement. Tension was so thick in the air it was almost touchable.
Washington D.C. Mayor, Muriel Bowser had to call in the National Guard, FBI, and other law enforcement bodies to help.
She later imposed a curfew on the United States capital.
A woman who was shot in the Capitol died Wednesday evening at a DC hospital where she was taken for treatment.
In the middle of the chaos, Trump, who was obviously enjoying the dangerous situation, urged on the mob on Twitter.
Even when the police were able to push the mob away from the Capitol, many of them still lurked around despite the curfew.
Despite the horror of what many thought was an unprecedented attack on America’s democracy, Trump eulogised the protesters as “patriots”. He said they were “on the right side of history.”
Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, hurriedly put down the tweet.
Since Donald Trump lost the November 4, 2020, he has been unrelenting in casting shadows on the vote, calling it a big fraud, without evidence.
