Gov Kabir Yusuf Sad, Mad as Police Shun Independence Day Anniversary Parade in Kano

Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, is sad and mad at the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, who he accused of partisanship following the police command’s withdrawal from Wednesday’s Independence Day anniversary parade held in Kano.

The Governor expressed his frustration and anger while concluding his speech at the event on Wednesday, describing the Police Commissioner’s action as an affront to the people of Kano and a slur on the spirit of national unity.

He urged all the security agencies in the state to commit themselves to serving the people with dedication and respect, regardless of tribes or creed or political leaning.

“Security agencies, in Kano in particular, shouldn’t be involving themselves in partisan politics, which will do no good to all of us in Kano State and in Nigeria. Let me …seize this opportunity as a Nigerian, as Kano citizen, and as the Chief Security Officer of Kano State, to condemn the unethical and partisan attitude of the current Commissioner of Police in Kano State.”

Gov. Yusuf described the Police Commissioner’s absence from the parade, along with his personnel as a deliberate plot to embarrassed the state on a historic day.

“As you can see, on this historic independent anniversary of Nigeria, he decided to pull out of the parade along with his own personnel,” the governor continued. “This is for reasons pertinent to him and pertinent to his people. Let me say that, as Kano State’s Chief Security Officer, and on behalf of the government, we are not happy with this attitude of the Commissioner of Police.”

Prior to the Commissioner’s embarrassing decision, Yusuf maintained that Kano had remained peaceful and the people had been eager to celebrate the country’s 65th independence anniversary together in peace and unity. There was, therefore, no reason for the Police Commissioner to do what he did.

He insisted that such action contravened the letter and spirit of the Nigerian Constitution.

Describing the Police Commissioner’s conduct as “unethical and disloyalty to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Yusuf disclosed that he used his pilot car to go around.

While thanking other security agencies for their participation in the parade, Yusuf assured the people of his government’s continued effort to sustain the existing peace and unity in the state.

When Daily Trust’s correspondent reached out to the Police Commissioner, he simply said, “I am on a condolence visit. I will call you back later.”

He never did as at press time.
